ब्रा॑ह्म॒णो ज॑ज्ञे प्रथ॒मो दश॑शीर्षो॒ दशा॑स्यः । स सोमं॑ प्रथ॒मः प॑पौ॒ स च॑कारार॒सं वि॒षम् ॥ (१)

सर्पो में सब से पहले तक्षक उत्पन्न हुआ, जो मनुष्यों में ब्राह्मण के समान सरपों में पूज्य था. उस के दस शीश और दस मुख थे. क्षत्रिय आदि जातियों वाले सर्पो से पहले उत्पन्न होने के कारण तक्षक ने सब से पहले स्वर्गलोक में स्थित अमृत पिया. सोम अर्थात्‌ अमृत पीने वाला ब्राह्मण तक्षक कंद मूल आदि से उत्पन्न रस को विष के प्रभाव से हीन बनाए. Due to being born before the serpents of Kshatriya etc. jatis, Takshak first drank nectar located in heaven.
